Making the most out of your money is extremely important, and when it comes to heating your house, squeezing the most value out of every drop of fuel from your gas supplier is not only good for your wallet, but it’s also good for the environment. Saving energy doesn’t have to be a hassle, and here are a few quick things that you can do today, that will save you a lot of money when the bill comes through the door.
- Turn your thermostat down. If you can reduce your room temperate by 1 degree you can reduce your heating bill by as much as 10% (which averages out at around £55 per year). You can make these savings even greater by programming your boiler and hot water to only come on when required.
- Your hot water thermostat should be set to 60 degrees. Any higher and you are wasting energy (and risking scalding) and any lower and you face the risk of Legionella.
- Always turn off the lights when you leave a room. Now this might sound a little bit obvious but it does have an impact. Another killer is lights that are left permanently on, if you have a dark corridor, for example, instead of leaving a light on throughout the day, buy yourself a mirror and make the most of what little light you do have.
- Use energy saving light bulbs. These days it’s quite difficult not to use energy saving light bulbs, but if you haven’t made the change yet, do it sooner rather than later. An energy saving light bulb lasts ten times longer than an ordinary bulb and will save you £40 over the course of its lifetime.
- Use appliances to their best potential. Don’t leave things on standby and don’t leave laptops and mobile phones charging all the time. Always try and do full loads with the dishwasher, tumble drier or washing machine.
- Make sure that you’re getting the most out of your energy supplier. Generally speaking suppliers are broadly similar, but with some (British Gas for example) you can get deals on other services. Have a look at the British Gas website to find out more about their boiler insurance policies. From about £7 a month these policies ensure round the clock boiler servicing. This should help to keep you boiler functioning as efficiently as possible.
One final thing you can do is do a quick search on the internet for energy saving websites. There are a number of companies out there that can save you a significant amount of money just by answering a few questions, and they’re often free so it might be worth a few minutes to look.
