Software Agents for Smart-Energy Networks
The key to smart energy is information technology's capacity to optimize day-to-day grid operations. In a Smart-Energy Network, each and every electrical device drawing power from the grid, large or small, acts as an intelligent agent communicating operational status to the local and regional power utility, collecting information on grid conditions and responding in ways that increase energy efficiency and reduce power infrastructure requirements, even allowing the power grid to be self healing - an important capability given recent events in North America and Europe.
In real-world terms, this means incorporating network or 'presence' aware devices into everything from fridges and dishwashers, to large commercial buildings, to the local substation telemetry, and eventually to the combination fuel-cell/HVAC system that will be located in the basement of every home, commercial building and factory. It also means applying this same model to state-of-the-art storage systems and presence-aware devices to provide power management, regulation and peak-shaving both across the internal power bus, as well to the power grid beyond. Applications include transit systems, commercial real estate, industrial factories and even residential housing.

Real-Time Power
The other half of the Smart-Energy equation is developing real-time presence-aware power management controls. Starting with automated transit systems (subway, ART system, monorail, people movers, etc.), Clarian has developed technologies to provide real-time optimization of energy consumption using state-of-the-art rate control and power modulation technologies that supplement existing safety-critical onboard and wayside ATC controls as well enable presence-awareness in vehicles so that they can operate in unison, rather than autonomously as they do today. These capabilities in turn create broader network energy efficiencies, smoother ride and reduced wear and tear, increased capacity, and reduced rolling stock and power infrastructure requirements.

Energy Modeling and Simulation Tools
As part of these research and development efforts, Clarian has developed a suite of energy modeling and simulation tools. These tools can be used by transit agencies and/or system operators as part of either the design process or operational configuration to optimize or re-configure existing operations to begin realizing immediate energy cost-savings.
